Thursday afternoon we spent at Wellington Zoo. With annual passes we visit at least once a fortnight and the girls are well known amongst the staff. We know the timing of all the animal feedings as well as the keepers and the girls were ecstatic to be able to feed the giraffes.
The nocturnal house has been renovated again and the improvements have made for much easier sightings of Kiwi. We’ve seen Kiwi on our past two visits. The baby chimp is always a delight to see and on Thursday we saw the mother calmly strolling around with bubs hanging onto her underbelly. It’s been a few month’s since we’ve all been able to sit and watch the chimps due to Sophie being petrified of them. She had been viewing them in their indoor enclosure, with her nose pressed against the glass, when one struck at the glass violently. She is still a little wary of them, but she is also beginning to see why they are so absolutely captivating too.
We always talk about where the animals come from and why they are in a Zoo environment. I often have to remind myself how I’d feel if I was actually on their turf in the wild! The girls, with their sponge like minds, retain all the information so accurately that they are increasingly correcting me and filling in blanks where my memory fails me!
