Tuesday 17 May marks the full moon and in the southern hemisphere it is called the ‘Snow Moon’.
The Snow Moon is associated with the astrological sign of Scorpio. This is a good time for transformation, preparation and for strengthening communication. |
In the UK the full moon in May is often known as ‘Milk Moon’ or ‘Flower Moon’.
There are many different names for full moons, from different cultures and countries, but they are all linked to the seasons.
Here in Wellington, on the eve of the full moon, it’s been a blustery, autumn, day. But the elements didn’t stop us from meeting with some friends at our local playground, where the children ran hard out for nearly two hours (not feeling the cold of course!). Before sun-down we made a quick visit to the lovely ‘Crystal People,’ in Kilbirne, and on our return trip we couldn’t resist parking up to have a quick run on the grass under the glow of the moon’s light.
I asked Charlotte if she thought ‘Full Moon‘ would be a suitable topic for this week’s ‘Lyrical Sunday’ and she said, ‘Yes!’.
We found some very interesting links whilst seeking inspiration;
- Did you know people in different hemispheres see the moon in a slightly different way?!
- One of the earliest aids to agriculture was planting by the moon. In New Zealand, even today, the Maori calendar is widely used and well respected, not just for gardening but for fishing as well!
- Here’s a fun Snow Moon Ritual for those feeling fed up with winter (though it hasn’t officially started in New Zealand till 1 June) and wanting to welcome back spring already.
And some moon poetry too;

If you’ve not joined in with Lyrical Sunday before click the button below to find out more… otherwise, just come back on Sunday 22nd May to read some Full Moon prose and link up with your own poems.
